What "Function" Means On A Hospital Bed
"Function" means the number of bed sections that adjust. It is not a measure of quality — a solid 2-function bed beats a cheap, wobbly 6-function one.
- Function 1: raises the head section
- Function 2: raises the knee and leg section
- Function 3: adjusts the overall bed height
- Functions 4-6: Trendelenburg tilt, lateral turning, and automatic chair position
2-Function Beds: The Most Common Choice
This is the most rented model. The head and leg sections are adjusted with hand cranks at the foot of the bed.
Best For
Patients who can still move a little on their own — an elderly person who can sit up with help, or someone recovering from surgery over a few months.
Its Limit
The bed height is fixed. If the carer has to stoop repeatedly every day, that causes back pain over the long run.
3-Function Beds: The Sweet Spot
The important addition here is height adjustment. The bed drops low so the patient is safe, and rises to the carer’s waist height for bathing or changing.
For most families caring for a stroke patient at home, this is the best value. It cuts the carer’s physical load without the cost of a fully electric bed.
- Reduces the carer’s risk of back injury
- Makes wheelchair transfers easier
- Still usable during a power cut
6-Function Electric: When It Is Worth It
Every adjustment is made with a remote. Some models turn the patient left and right automatically, and fold into a chair shape.
An electric bed earns its cost when the patient is fully bedridden and the carer works alone. Turning an adult manually every two hours is heavy work an older carer simply cannot sustain.
When It Is Not Worth It
If the patient can still get to the bathroom with help, most of the extra functions go unused. That money is better spent on a better mattress.
Quick Summary
| Patient Condition | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Can sit and stand with help | 2-function |
