How To Move A Patient From Bed To Wheelchair Safely

Set Up Before You Touch The Patient

Most carer injuries come from rushed preparation, not from bad technique. Spend a minute setting up the space before you start.

1. Lock every wheel on both the bed and the wheelchair
2. Place the wheelchair at 45 degrees on the patient’s stronger side
3. Swing away or remove the wheelchair footrests
4. Lower the bed until the patient’s feet can reach the floor
5. Make sure the patient is wearing non-slip shoes or slippers

The Transfer, Step By Step

Move slowly and tell the patient each step before you do it. A startled patient tenses up and becomes much heavier.

1. Raise the head of the bed so the patient is already half sitting
2. Help them turn until their legs hang over the edge of the bed
3. Let them sit for a moment — standing too fast causes dizziness
4. Stand in front of them with your knees bracing theirs
5. Hold around their torso under the arms — never pull on an arm
6. Count "one, two, three" and lift using your legs, not your back
7. Pivot in small steps and lower them slowly into the chair

Mistakes To Avoid

• Pulling on a weak arm or shoulder — this can dislocate it
• Bending with a straight back and locked knees
• Twisting your own body while lifting
• Transferring alone when the patient is much larger than you
• Forgetting to lock the wheels — the single most common accident

If the patient cannot bear any weight at all, do not attempt a standing transfer. Use a slide board or get a second person to help.

What Bed Height Contributes

A height-adjustable bed turns a transfer from lifting work into guiding work. Set the bed slightly higher than the wheelchair so gravity works with you.
