Choosing The Right Room
The biggest room is not always the best one. What matters more is the distance to the bathroom and how easily the family can keep an eye on the patient.
Many families end up moving the patient to the living room or a downstairs room to avoid climbing stairs several times a day. That is a practical decision, not a sign of neglect.
- As close to the bathroom as possible
- Avoid upstairs rooms if the staircase is steep
- Good ventilation and natural light
- Near the family living space so the patient is not isolated
Bed Placement And Surrounding Space
Position the bed so at least one side is completely clear. That side will be used for every transfer, bed bath and pad change.
- Leave 60cm to 90cm of clear space on the main side
- Put a small table within the patient’s reach
- Make sure a light switch is reachable from the bed
- Provide power sockets for an electric bed and mattress pump
- Remove small rugs that could cause a slip
Storing Care Supplies
Everything used daily should be within the carer’s reach without leaving the bedside.
- Pads, wet wipes and disposable gloves
- Moisturiser and a barrier cream
- A lidded bin for soiled pads
- Medication in a labelled box sorted by time of day
- A thermometer and blood pressure monitor
Keep a written medication list on the bedroom wall. In an emergency, the medical team needs that information immediately.
Room Safety And Air Quality
A patient’s room needs better ventilation than an ordinary bedroom because the patient is in it all day.
- Open a window at least once a day
- Do not aim air-conditioning airflow directly at the patient
- Fit a dim night light for night-time checks
- Keep the floor around the bed dry at all times
For beds that fit into tight spaces, see the 2-function models on the products page or compare them in our bed function guide.
If the patient will be lying down for long periods, plan the mattress early — read our mattress comparison.
